Woman Says Her Sister Planned a Disney Trip for One Child — Then Asked Her To Babysit the Son Being Left Behind

A woman says she called out her sister after learning that a planned Disney World vacation would include only one of her sister’s two children, leaving the older boy home while his younger half-brother went on the trip.

The woman, 26, shared the situation in a Reddit post, explaining that her sister, “Emma,” is 30 and has two sons: Eli, 11, from a previous relationship, and AJ, 5, with her husband, Jon. According to the poster, Eli’s biological father has never been involved, and Jon has been in the family for eight years. That means Jon has been in Eli’s life since he was about 3 years old.

The problem started when Emma called and asked if Eli could stay with the poster for a week in June. The poster works from home and said that would normally be fine, so she asked why he needed to stay over. That was when Emma started talking about a Disney World trip Jon had booked for the family. She mentioned the rides, the characters and how excited AJ would be.

Then the poster realized something was missing.

She asked why Eli was not going too, and Emma told her Jon was only paying for Emma and AJ. The poster immediately pushed back, asking how Emma could think that was okay. Emma defended the decision by saying Jon should not have to pay for a child who was not his.

That answer set the poster off. From her point of view, Jon was not some brand-new boyfriend with no history in the boy’s life. He had married Eli’s mother, helped build the family home and been the only father figure Eli had known for most of his childhood. Leaving him behind for Disney while taking the younger child felt cruel, especially because Eli was old enough to understand exactly what was happening.

The poster told Emma to think about how Eli would feel. Emma snapped back that the poster should get off her “high horse” and stop giving parenting advice since she did not have children. That was when the poster said she would watch Eli, but she did not need to be a parent herself to know Emma was being a bad mom by allowing it. Emma called her a name and hung up.

The comments were furious on Eli’s behalf.

One commenter pointed out that Jon had been the only father figure in Eli’s life for eight years and had been around since Eli was 3. They said the decision made them wonder how Eli was treated day to day in a home where he was apparently not considered part of the same family as his younger brother.

Another commenter said the poster should make sure Eli knows she is on his side and that he understands the situation is not his fault. Several people urged her to do something special with him during the week if she does end up watching him, not because it would erase the hurt, but because he needed at least one adult showing him he mattered.

Others focused on Emma. Some said she should refuse to go unless both children were included. One commenter said the poster should not help make the trip easier by babysitting, because watching Eli would allow Emma and Jon to go through with excluding him without facing the full weight of that decision. Another said if the trip really happened, the poster should make sure other family members knew exactly why Eli was not there.

A few commenters also brought up the money issue. If Emma does not work and Jon controls the family finances, they questioned why Emma was accepting a setup where her older child was treated as separate from the rest of the household. One commenter called it a terrible message to send a child, especially when the stepparent has been in the picture for years.

The hardest part of the story is that Eli was not being left out of a small errand or a dinner reservation. He was being left out of Disney World, while his mother, stepfather and little brother went without him. At 11, he would absolutely know what that meant. He would know who got chosen, who got paid for and who got dropped off somewhere else.

By the end of the thread, most people agreed the poster’s wording may have been harsh, but the anger behind it made sense. Emma was not simply making a parenting choice other people disliked. She was asking her sister to help cover for a vacation plan that split her children into two categories: the child included in the family trip and the child left behind.
