Woman Says Her Friend Secretly Recorded Their Conversations — Then Brushed It Off as “Personal Use”

A woman says she no longer feels comfortable opening up to a friend after finding out the friend had been recording their conversations without telling her.

She shared the situation in a Reddit post, explaining that she only discovered the recordings because the friend played one back and she recognized her own voice. Until that moment, she had no idea their conversations were being saved on the friend’s phone. The post was shared in the Am I Overreacting subreddit under the friendship tag.

When she asked about it, the friend said it was not a big deal because the recordings were “just for personal use” and were not being shared with anyone. The friend’s explanation was that they sometimes record conversations so they do not forget things later.

That answer did not make the poster feel better. She said knowing she might be recorded at random without her consent made her uncomfortable. Now, instead of relaxing around this friend, she feels strange opening up or joking around the way she normally would.

The friend did not seem to understand why it bothered her so much. According to the post, they thought she was turning it into something “creepy” when, in their view, it was not. That left the poster wondering if she was overreacting or if her discomfort made sense.

Commenters mostly told her she was not overreacting. One person said the legality may depend on where she lives, but either way, it was understandable to feel bothered by it. Another commenter said recording someone without telling them is unnerving and would make a lot of people react the same way.

Several people talked about consent and privacy. One commenter said that even if a recording is technically legal in some places, that does not make it a healthy thing to do in a friendship. Another said the issue was not only the law, but the way the friend quietly changed the terms of private conversations without telling the person being recorded.

Some commenters pointed out that there are easier ways to remember things. The friend could write notes, type details into a phone or ask for clarification later. Secretly recording casual conversations makes the whole thing feel different, especially when the other person only finds out by hearing their own voice played back unexpectedly.

A few people raised the possibility that the friend could have memory issues or anxiety around forgetting details, but even those comments said the poster still had the right to ask direct questions and set a firm boundary. One commenter suggested calmly asking why the friend records conversations and how they use the recordings, then deciding from there whether the friendship still feels safe.

The bigger problem is that trust got damaged. The poster was not told, did not agree to it and had no reason to think her private conversations were being saved. Once she found out, it changed how she felt around someone she used to speak freely with.

By the end of the thread, most people seemed to agree that the friend’s “personal use” explanation did not erase the issue. The poster was not being dramatic for feeling weird. She found out her normal conversations may have been recorded without warning, and now she has to decide if this is a friendship where she can still speak honestly.
