Mother Says Her Neighbors Kept Calling Her Daughter Their Son’s “Twin” — Then They Put the Child in a Costume, Took Her to a Party, and Told Police It Was All a Misunderstanding

In a Reddit post, a mother said things with one neighborhood couple started getting strange almost as soon as her family moved in. According to the post, the couple became oddly fixated on her oldest daughter, who had just started school and happened to be in the same class as their son. The husband kept joking that the two children looked like twins, even though the mother said they clearly did not. The wife repeatedly fussed over the baby, talked about having lost two daughters, and kept trying to draw the family into more social time than they wanted. At first, the mother said she brushed some of it off as overfriendliness. Over time, it stopped feeling harmless.

She wrote that the neighbors’ attention toward her oldest daughter became especially uncomfortable. In the post, she said they would call the girl a special nickname, try to touch her hair, and talk to her on the way home from school. Her daughter later said both adults had tried to pick her up physically and that the neighbor’s wife kept trying to touch her hair. When the father confronted them, they insisted it was just part of the local culture. The mother said it was not. After that, the hair-touching and picking up seemed to stop for a while, but the fixation did not.

As Halloween approached, the situation got much worse. The mother said the neighbors kept pushing for the children to attend what they called a “Hallovenn” party and specifically wanted her daughter dressed as Gretel to match their son’s Hans. She refused over and over. According to the post, the neighbor still bought costumes for all three girls and later showed up in the park with the daughter’s teacher, who tried to help pressure her into agreeing. The mother said she made it clear that none of her children would be attending. Then, days later, her daughter came home from school with her hair redone and new accessories. The girl said the teacher had fixed her hair during lunch using items the neighbor had bought. When the mother confronted the teacher, the teacher admitted it and defended it by saying the neighbor had spent money and did not want the accessories to go to waste.

The night of trick-or-treating is when everything blew up. The mother said she let her daughter play nearby with another child who was not going door to door. At some point, she realized she could no longer hear them and went outside looking. One of the neighborhood children told her that the neighbors had picked up her daughter in their car. She ran over there with her baby and found a party going on in the garden. Her daughter was there with her hair done, wearing the costume, and holding a candy bag. The mother called the police before saying anything else, then confronted the couple and called them pedophiles. She left with her daughter once officers arrived.

The next day at school, the teacher was angry with her. According to the post, the teacher said she had overreacted, that the father volunteered for the children’s football club, and that filing a police report was not the wisest choice. She also said the neighbors were grieving and had only crossed a line out of love for children they had lost. The mother was told she should have gone through school mediation instead of embarrassing them in public. She refused to drop the complaint.

In the update, the mother said she and her husband tried to pursue the police report but quickly felt the whole thing was being dismissed. A male officer joined the reporting process and, according to her, turned out to be the teacher’s ex. She said all three officers seemed more interested in asking why she would not let her daughter go to the party than in the fact that the neighbors had taken the child after repeated refusals. The couple claimed they had misunderstood and only wanted what was best for the girl. The mother did not believe them.

After the report, the harassment continued. She said the neighbors came to the house and kept knocking, left long notes in the mailbox about feeling connected to her daughter and knowing what was best for her, and started showing up wherever she went. In one update, she said the neighbor’s wife followed her into a store, blocked her with a shopping cart, and tried to touch the baby’s hair. She screamed to get her away. Her daughter also reported that the neighbor was taking photos of her from across the street while she played outside. Even after all of that, police reportedly just kept saying they would “have a word” with the couple.

By the end of the update, the mother’s husband was trying to get home sooner, the family was saving notes and documenting encounters, and the mother sounded exhausted and frightened rather than uncertain. What started as overly friendly neighbors calling her daughter someone’s “twin” had turned into costumes, school interference, a surprise pickup, police reports, mailbox notes, and a mother who no longer felt safe leaving her child alone outside.
