Woman Says She Came Home to Find Her Locks Changed — Then Her Roommate Claimed She Had “Moved Out”
A woman on Reddit said she left her apartment for a short trip and expected to come back to everything exactly as she left it. She had been living with a roommate for several months, splitting rent and bills evenly, and said there hadn’t been any major fights before she left.
According to her post, the situation went sideways the moment she got back. She said her key wouldn’t work. At first, she thought maybe the lock was jammed or she had the wrong key, but after trying multiple times, it became clear something had changed.
She knocked on the door, and after a few minutes, her roommate answered—but didn’t seem surprised to see her. Instead, she acted confused and asked why she was there.
That was when things got strange.
The woman said her roommate told her she had already moved out. She said the roommate spoke like it was a done deal, claiming they had talked about it before she left and that she had taken all her belongings with her. The problem was, none of that had actually happened.
She said she pushed back immediately and told her roommate that wasn’t true. Her things were still inside, and she had never agreed to leave. The roommate reportedly doubled down, saying she had “assumed” she was moving out and had already made arrangements based on that.
When the woman asked about her belongings, the roommate told her most of them had been packed up. Some were still inside, but others had been moved or stored. She also admitted she had changed the locks while she was gone.
At that point, the woman said she called the landlord.
The landlord confirmed that no official notice had been given and that both names were still tied to the lease. According to her, the landlord sounded just as confused as she was and told her she had every right to be there.
When she relayed that information back to her roommate, the situation escalated. The roommate became defensive and said she had already made plans for a new tenant. She claimed she couldn’t just undo everything now.
The woman said she ended up having to involve the police just to get back into her own apartment. Officers arrived, spoke to both sides, and ultimately told the roommate she couldn’t legally lock her out. She was allowed back inside, where she found her belongings partially packed and moved around.
She said some items were missing or misplaced, and the whole apartment felt different—like she had walked into someone else’s space.
After that, she started the process of removing herself from the situation. She said she coordinated with the landlord to either transfer units or end the lease early, because she no longer felt comfortable living there.
By the end of her post, she said the experience left her shaken. What she thought was a stable living situation turned into something she had to fight just to get back into—and it all happened while she was gone for a short trip she thought was completely routine.
