Woman says her best friend hooked up with a taken groomsman at a huge wedding — and then tried to save herself by telling everyone it was the bride’s 19-year-old sister in the room instead
A 24-year-old woman on Reddit said a longtime friendship blew up after one wedding turned into a total mess.
She wrote that she and her best friend, Caroline, had known each other practically their whole lives. Their moms were close, their families had a lot of mutual friends, and they were both invited to a big wedding for a family friend, with around 500 guests. The woman said everything was normal at first. Then Caroline got very drunk and started openly throwing herself at one of the groomsmen, Daniel.
According to her post, Caroline kept hanging all over him all night — asking him to dance, fetching drinks from the open bar, and generally making it obvious she had wanted him for a long time. The awkward part was that Daniel had a serious girlfriend of about six years. The girlfriend had skipped the wedding because she did not know the couple well and figured she would barely see him anyway since he was a groomsman. The woman said she tried to pull Caroline away a couple of times, but Caroline snapped at her, and Daniel did not seem all that eager to shut it down either.
Then it got much worse. The woman said she did not see it happen herself, but by the end of the night Caroline and Daniel were having sex in another room at the hall. Someone’s mother walked in on them. The woman said this person knew Daniel and his girlfriend, but did not know Caroline. In that moment, instead of admitting who she was, Caroline told the woman she was Nicola — the poster’s 19-year-old younger sister.
That lie spread instantly.
The poster wrote that word moved fast through the wedding that “Nicola” had been caught sleeping with Daniel. Guests were calling her sister disrespectful, a homewrecker, rude, and worse. What made it even uglier was that Caroline did not just let the rumor stand. According to the post, she actively confirmed it to other people at the wedding. The bride and groom were furious. Nicola was mortified. And when the woman confronted Caroline that night, Caroline flat-out denied it — even though Daniel himself later confirmed that it had been Caroline, not Nicola.
The next day, Caroline texted Nicola a weak apology. The woman said it was full of “lol” and “haha,” with a bunch of excuses about being drunk and not knowing what she was doing. Nicola, meanwhile, felt like her life was ruined. The woman said they lived in a very tight-knit community, and even though some people now knew the truth, plenty of guests still believed the false story and were talking behind Nicola’s back. She also said her sister was terrified about what might happen if Daniel’s long-term girlfriend found out the wrong version first.
At first, the woman struggled with what to do because Caroline had been a genuinely great friend for years before this. But after getting advice, she decided Caroline needed to fix the damage herself if she wanted any hope of keeping the friendship. About a week and a half later, Caroline casually called asking to sleep over because the woman’s place was closer to some downtown event she wanted to attend. The woman said that made it painfully clear Caroline had no idea anyone was truly angry with her. When she brought up the wedding, Caroline laughed and said Nicola needed to “grow up and get over it.”
That was when the woman finally let her have it. She told Caroline that if this was really “no big deal,” then she should have no problem publicly admitting that she was the one who hooked up with Daniel and that Nicola had done nothing. She gave her an ultimatum: post the truth on Facebook and apologize, or the friendship was over. To her surprise, Caroline actually did it. The part that still annoyed the woman, though, was the reaction. Instead of getting dragged, Caroline got praised by some people for being “brave” and “doing the right thing.” The woman said that drove her crazy because Caroline never would have confessed if she had not been forced into it. Still, the most important part was that Nicola’s name was finally cleared.
She also gave one last update on Daniel: according to his Instagram, he and his girlfriend were still together. Whether the girlfriend ever learned what really happened, the woman said she did not know and did not care. In her words, that was “not my trainwreck.”
So what started as one drunk hookup at a wedding turned into a reputation disaster for an innocent 19-year-old girl — all because one woman decided throwing her best friend’s sister under the bus was easier than owning what she did.
