“Sharia Law Is Incompatible With American Values”: Tuberville Post Sparks Fresh Backlash

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., escalated his rhetoric on Islam Monday by posting on X that “Sharia Law is INCOMPATIBLE with American values,” adding, “We do not want any more radical Islam here.” The comment came during a stretch of rising anti-Muslim rhetoric from some Republican lawmakers, a trend that has intensified alongside tensions tied to Iran and several recent violent incidents involving Muslim suspects.

Tuberville’s post did not land in a vacuum. Reuters reported last week that he had already come under fire for previous anti-Muslim remarks, including a post tying New York City’s first Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani, to the Sept. 11 attacks. The Council on American-Islamic Relations has labeled Tuberville an anti-Muslim extremist, while Democrats and Muslim advocacy groups have argued that this kind of language paints millions of Muslim Americans with the same brush as violent extremists.

The immediate backdrop includes several high-profile security incidents. Reuters reported on March 9 that two men were charged with terrorism-related crimes after allegedly throwing homemade bombs at an anti-Islam protest in New York and citing inspiration from Islamic State. AP and Reuters also reported on the March 12 attack at a Michigan synagogue, where a man rammed a vehicle into the building and was fatally shot by security; federal authorities described it as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.

Even so, AP reported that critics have pushed back hard on warnings about “Sharia law” in America, saying they misrepresent both Islam and Muslim life in the United States. Reuters likewise noted that American Muslims broadly do not support imposing Sharia as civil law in the country, even as some Republican lawmakers have continued using the issue as a political flashpoint.
