Woman says her boyfriend secretly lined up new owners for her dog — and the update says even his own friends cut him off after hearing what really happened
A woman on Reddit said she thought she and her boyfriend were working through the practical side of living together with her dog, Theo, until she realized he had already made a decision behind her back. In a story later collected by r/BestofRedditorUpdates, she wrote that Theo had been with her through some of the hardest stretches of her life, including periods when money was tight enough that she donated plasma just to keep both of them afloat. She said she and her boyfriend had talked before about what living together would look like, including how to handle his pet allergies, and that he had been fully on board at the time.
Then, according to the post, his behavior shifted. Instead of having a real conversation about his allergy struggles or whether the relationship was still workable, he invited a friend named Mike and Mike’s girlfriend Sarah over under the pretense that everyone was on the same page. The woman later learned that he had told them she had agreed to rehome Theo and wanted the dog to go to people they knew and trusted. She wrote that the scene quickly made it clear something was badly off: the couple had arrived thinking they were there to adopt her dog, while she was still standing there very much expecting to keep him.
The update, posted 10 days later, made the manipulation much clearer. She said she left that night with Theo and stayed at her parents’ house, while her ex called and texted nonstop asking to talk. A few days later, she went back with her parents to get the rest of her things from the condo while he was at work. She also said she kept a line of contact open only long enough to sort out getting off the lease, not because she had any interest in repairing the relationship.
What really turned the story, though, was the conversation she later had with Mike and Sarah. She wrote that the two met up with her for dinner and explained they had been disgusted after learning the truth. According to her update, the boyfriend had told them she was already planning to give Theo up because his allergies were “too much to deal with,” and that everyone involved was comfortable with the arrangement. Once Mike learned that was false, she said, he immediately turned on the boyfriend and told him they could not be friends anymore. She added that Mike and Sarah both felt manipulated and betrayed by the way they had been used in the setup.
The ex did eventually show up at her parents’ house to apologize, but the update makes clear she was done by then. She wrote that he told her he had made a huge mistake and said he did not think she would actually leave. Her response was blunt: he had gone behind her back to try to get rid of her family, manipulated other people into helping, and destroyed any trust they had left. She also wrote that when he asked if he could at least see Theo, she laughed in his face and closed the door.
What makes the story land is not just the dog. It is how cleanly it exposes the boyfriend’s assumptions. He apparently believed she would either go along with the surprise or feel too trapped and embarrassed to stop it once other people were involved. Instead, she left, kept Theo, lost the boyfriend, and watched his own friends side with her once they understood what he had tried to do. By the end of the update, the emotional center of the story was less “woman chooses dog over boyfriend” and more “man quietly reveals exactly how entitled he is to make life-altering decisions for someone else.”
