Woman Says Her “Neighborhood Watch” Neighbor Took Someone’s Mower, Cut Her Yard, Then Said He’d Be Back in Two Days

A woman says she and her roommate had been uneasy about an older neighbor across the street since the day they moved into their townhome. But the situation became much harder to brush off when he allegedly took someone else’s lawn mower, cut their grass without permission, and then told them he planned to come back.

The 27-year-old woman explained in a Reddit post that she and her 25-year-old roommate bought and moved into the townhome the year before. From the beginning, the neighbor — a man in his 70s — made them uncomfortable.

When they were moving in, he stood outside by the street and watched them carry everything inside. That was strange, but not enough on its own to make a scene. They ignored it and tried to move on.

Then they started noticing his habits around the neighborhood.

According to the woman, he regularly walked around checking people’s garbage cans. Not just glancing at them from the sidewalk, either. She said he would open them one by one, including theirs, and look inside. He had also moved their garbage cans around on trash day, which she initially tried to interpret as a neighborly favor.

But the behavior kept stacking up.

Her roommate later caught him opening people’s mailboxes and looking inside. The woman said he did not appear to take anything, but the fact that he was opening mailboxes at all bothered them. It made him feel less like a harmless neighborhood busybody and more like someone who believed he had the right to inspect everyone else’s property.

There were other signs that made them uneasy too. The woman said he had pieces of paper taped in all of his windows. She understood wanting privacy, but the paper-covered windows felt strange to her, especially alongside everything else they had seen.

Then came the incident that changed how safe they felt around him.

One night around 8 p.m., the women came home after dark and saw him pacing in his front yard with a gun in his hand. The neighborhood, according to her, was safe and quiet. Kids were often outside, and other neighbors regularly hung out in front of their homes. She said there was no obvious reason for anyone to be walking around outside with a gun.

By the time she got inside and was ready to call police, he was gone.

That was already sitting in the back of her mind when the lawn mower incident happened.

While the woman was at work, the neighbor came onto their property and mowed their lawn without asking. The part that made it even stranger was that they had already mowed it the night before. He did not cut an overgrown yard. He simply cut it shorter.

After he finished, he rang the doorbell four times and waited outside for her roommate to answer.

Because of the earlier gun incident, the woman was watching him through their camera while she was at work. She texted her roommate and told her not to answer the door until she got home.

Then she called her parents.

Her dad met her at the house after she got off work. About an hour later, the neighbor rang the doorbell again. This time, the woman and her father spoke with him.

That conversation made the situation even weirder.

The neighbor reportedly told them he had “borrowed” the lawn mower he used, but added that the owners did not know he had borrowed it. He said he used it because it was better than the mower they had and because it would “thin out” their grass, which he said was getting too thick.

The woman thanked him but made it clear they did not need help taking care of their yard.

Instead of simply accepting that, he told her he would be back in two days to weed eat.

She told him not to.

That was when he called himself a “half-good Samaritan,” apparently because she had told him not to return.

The woman said she and her roommate were deeply uncomfortable with the whole thing. Not only had he come onto their property and mowed without permission, but he had also apparently taken someone else’s mower to do it. Her coworkers had been watching the camera with her while she was at work and thought she should contact police.

At first, she wondered if that was too much. She did not want to cause a scene or make the neighbor angry. She also said she did not necessarily think he was dangerous.

But the gun incident, the trash cans, the mailboxes, the unwanted lawn mowing, and the borrowed-without-permission mower all made it harder for her to treat it like a harmless older man being odd.

She was also worried about the owner of the mower. In the comments, she said she thought she had found the mower between two townhome units, but she was not sure who it belonged to or if it was definitely the same one.

The main thing she wanted was simple: she did not want him on her property again.

What commenters said

Most commenters told her she was not overreacting. Several said the man’s behavior showed a serious lack of boundaries, especially because he had already been seen checking trash cans, opening mailboxes, walking around with a gun, and entering her yard without permission.

One commenter said something was clearly off and urged her to document every incident in case the behavior escalated. Others suggested saving camera footage, notifying the property manager or HOA if there was one, and filing a police report or at least asking police for guidance.

A lot of people focused on the mower. To them, the fact that he admitted the owner did not know he had “borrowed” it changed the situation. It was not simply an awkward neighbor mowing too much grass. It sounded like he had taken someone else’s property, used it on a different yard, and planned to come back.

Some commenters suggested she tell the person who owned the mower, especially if she could figure out who it belonged to. Others said she should not confront him alone and should avoid doing anything that might provoke him, given the earlier gun incident.

A few people tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, saying older neighbors can sometimes get stuck in routines or become overly invested in how the neighborhood looks. But even those comments did not fully explain away the mailbox checking or the gun.

The strongest advice was for her to take it seriously without escalating face-to-face. Keep records, involve the right people, and make it clear through official channels that he is not allowed on the property.
